“Yo (excuse me miss)” is a music video directed by Erik
White and produced by “Dre & Vidal”- a song writing and production duo
consisting of Andre Harris and Vidal Davis. The video was released in 2005 in
America and released in 2006 worldwide. The video generally revolves around the
idea of gaining the attention of a girl who caught the main character’s eye. It
begins with Chris Brown coming in late to work and as he speaks to his boss, he
spots a female outside the shop and decides to go after her. With the attempt
to get the female to notice him, he amongst his friends creates a dance routine
and they execute this routine as they follow the female’s footsteps. The theme shown in this video is teenage
attraction. The video explores this showing how most teenagers approach their
partners with a touch of exaggeration displayed through Chris Browns
performance (dancing)
His R&B music video is mainly performance based due to
the fact that the main activity in the video is dancing. The theme of the video
is an R&B theme, which is mostly an expression of emotions. In this video
the main character/artist (Chris Brown) uses dance as a way of expressing his
feelings to the girl he’s after. The main idea is replace his words with dance
to capture the female’s attention. The
target for this video would be mainly teenagers and young adults. Because of
the story line being portrayed, young people are more likely to relate to it as
there is a greater chance that it could happen to them. Not only is the song
catchy but the video is quite energetic; consisting of activities such as
basketball and the dance which would appeal to largely to the youth. Again the
mise-en-scene of the entire video just oozes youth. The costumes, location,
props (mp3 player at the beginning of the video) are all elements of a youthful
day. These factors merge together to encourage the target audience to purchase
this record. From this video I could use dome of the
different types of shots (medium long shot, close up of main characters etc.),
camera angles (high angle shot when the main characters were in the car). I
could also use the idea of costumes and consider the type of location.
Slow Down- Bobby Valentino
“Slow down” is a
debut single by Bobby Valentino produced by Tim & Bob (Tim Kelley and Bob
Robinson, aka Funktwons), an R&B /Hip-Hop production duo as well as
signwriting musicians. This single was released in America on March 8, 2005. In
this music video, Bobby Valentino spots a girl initially from behind on a road
called “Melrose”. From his view, he’s interested in the girl and in the end; he
finally gets a moment with her.
The theme of this R&B music video is to express himself
to the girl and gain her attention. This video leans towards the conceptual
aspect as the producers uses shots, camera angles and mise-en-scene to show the
target audience the concept of the video which is Bobby Valentino spots a girl
and Melrose, hes intrigued by her looks and goes after her. The artist is
represented as normal young man who is physically attracted to a girl he sees
passing by. With this representation, I think it’s safe to say that the target
audience this video is aimed at are the young generation; 13-29, hugely because
they can relate to this mostly as this is what young adults and teenagers go
through. Factors such as location, props and costumes help the target audience
to relate to the scenes of the video because it gives it a more realistic
appeal. This keeps them entertained throughout the video as well as encouraging
them to buy the record. From this video, I have chosen to with the idea of
casual clothing and a casual surrounding to suit my music for my video.
